The Military Prison Tour
These Alcatraz photos are taken while on the military history tour.
Before alcatraz became the infamous prison island we know today, it was actually a strategic military fortress.
They called it a three point military defense. Alcatraz, San Francisco shore, and Salsaulito shore together formed a triangle.
In the mid-1900s, just before the civil war, the island was the Army's western defense against Confederate attacks.
The island was inhabited with military soldiers and cannons to marvel!
A soldier's life was no easy feat!. On the tour, you'll learn and see the type of rations, clothes, and items a soldier was bestowed.
You'll also see some of the medical devices that were used to treat soldiers (often not successfully).
Sometimes the island would also keep military prisoners, too. However, most would say these prisoners were treated a whole lot better than later federal prisoners.
In the 20th century, Alcatraz eventually transformed into a federal prison island. No doubt, its history as a military fortress and location made it easy to turn the island into a prison.
Most people don't know about this part of the island's history. And most don't know that the island offers tours about the military history either. That's a shame because you don't want to miss it.
The tour is included in the price of your ticket to the island (FREE). It could last from 30 minutes to an hour. The tour is guided by guides in military costumes that you can talk to and ask questions about the history.
I hope you'll get to enjoy the tour, too. See more Alcatraz pictures on the next pages:
